Randy Hughes, Quality Director at Wiegel and the person at Wiegel responsible for leading the new certification stated, “We could not have made this transition go as smoothly as it did without the help of Illinois BIS and their full-time consultant, Charles Liedtke.”

Randy continued, “Since I have worked at Wiegel for 28 years and as a member of the quality department for 22, I’ve been able to see our company grow as a result of having good quality systems put into place. Because we had a very aggressive time table to transition to the new International Standard, Wiegel Tool Works used the services of Illinois BIS’ Senior Consultant Charles Liedtke to assist us with the change. With Charles’ help, we reviewed our entire ISO/TS 16949:2009 system and together wrote the guidelines for our new IATF 16949:2016 quality manual, which achieved a 70% improvement change in our quality system. Charles also reviewed and provided recommendations for updates to our ISO:14001 system and helped us integrate the two systems into one.  Not only did Charles help with the system modifications and the system integration, but Charles also trained our internal auditors and helped us complete the first round of internal audits. Wiegel Tool Works, highly recommends Illinois BIS for any manufacturer’s ISO or IATF 16949 training and consulting needs.”

Opportunity:  IATF 16949:2016 is a new global industry standard created by the International Automotive Task Force (IATF) that defines the requirements of a quality management system for organizations in the automotive industry and includes the latest revisions contributed by international automotive trade associations, auditors, suppliers, and original equipment manufacturers worldwide.

The new automotive QMS Standard, IATF 16949:2016, requires a documented process to verify that internal auditors are competent. The Standard also identifies the required competencies for Quality Management System Internal Auditors, Manufacturing Process Auditors, Product Auditors, and Second-Party Auditors (now REQUIRED for supplier evaluation) specifically:

  1. Understanding the automotive process approach for auditing, including risk-based thinking
  2. Understanding applicable customer-specific requirements
  3. Understanding applicable ISO 9001:2015 and IATF 16949:2016 requirements
  4. Understanding applicable core tools
  5. Understanding how to plan, conduct, report and close out audit findings

Any audits performed for the transition to IATF 16949 must be performed by auditors with these competencies or they will not be recognized by the Certification Body. This training will provide the necessary competencies for auditors. After successful completion of the training and passing the final examination, participants will receive a certificate showing evidence of required competence for internal quality management system auditors as described in IATF 16949:2016, Clause 7.2.3, items a) through e).
